PLOT: The attempted assassination of the American President is told and re-told from several different perspectives.
THE GOOD: Concept. Boy, the idea for Vantage Point sure sold great. A very 24 look and feel to the whole thing.
Twist. There's a little twist that actually got me pretty good. Made the movie a little interesting.

THE BAD: Execution. Unfortunately, the execution was poorly done. I got quite bored watching the same things over and over again. They could have made it at least a little bit more interesting to go back and watch another person's perspective, but instead it was lame. The movie is only 90 minutes long, but I swear it felt like two hours or more.
Plot holes. Really, too many to count. The time line is all screwed up as well.
Camera work. Lots of useless shots to extend the length of the film. I hate it when directors choose to use fast camera pans to represent panic. Pete Travis has a lot to learn.
Acting. Pretty, pretty, bad. Dennis Quaid, Matthew Fox, Forest Whitaker, William Hurt, Eduardo Noriega, and especially Sigourney Weaver, were all bad.

THE END: This film isn't really worth watching. It's one of the worst movies that I've actually seen in 2008 so far. What could have been a really cool action thriller turned out to be a less than mediocre shoot-the-terrorist flick. Don't pay to see this movie, and don't even waste time downloading it. Wait for it on basic cable.
DISCUSS: How would you have made this film differently?

Ok that is just wierd. I just finished a review of this movie on my own blog and then came to my GReader to see LoL Cats. Then saw you had a few entries I hadn't read yet and what would you know, a review on Vantage Point. :P
ReplyDeleteI totally was disappointed in this movie. I was so excited to see it when I first saw the previews. The movie really lost a lot of steam after they started pulling all the viewpoints together.
The thing that pissed me off the most was the annoyingly long car chase scene.
I would have maybe put in a different twist on the SPECOPS guy who went into the hotel to get the President. His story could have been a bit more involved. And I would have laid off the super high tech cellphone that the terrorist had. I mean seriously WTF network was he on. I don't think the iPhone 3G or any network would work that fast. Too much bullshit for me.
Later
I agree. That car chase scene was way too unrealistic. How many times did he get hit and still live through it? Not even any neck or head injuries. Absurd.
ReplyDeleteLOL @ the cell phone network. Even if they didn't catch the guy, they could at least track all the networks that he's on. Ah, how Hollywood doesn't know squat about technology.
