Oscar Night Party

Bethany and I had family over for an Oscar night party on Sunday. There was lots of good food and great time spent with loved ones. We even had a red carpet at our front door which Joyce and Juliana couldn't stay off of.

Before the Oscars started, I quizzed my family on some Oscar trivia. I came up with the questions myself based off of this year's Best Picture nominees. The big winner was Bethany, but everyone said that it was a tough quiz. I'll try and make it easier next year. Take a look and try it for yourself. No cheating by looking it up. Answers are in the comments, so don't look until you've got yours ready.

1) Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett star together in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. What other Oscar nominated movie have they appeared in together before?
A. Legends of the Fall
B. The Aviator
C. Babel
D. A River Runs Through It

2) Slumdog Millionaire features a scene in which a character jumps into a toilet. What other Danny Boyle film features a protagonist diving into a toilet?
A. Trainspotting
B. The Beach
C. 28 Days Later
D. Sunshine

3) In 1977, the year of the actual David Frost and Richard Nixon interviews, Frost/Nixon director Ron Howard was directing his first feature film. What was it?
A. Night Shift
B. Grand Theft Auto
C. Cocoon
D. Splash

4) In Milk, Harvey Milk is played by Academy Award winning actor, Sean Penn. What movie did he win the Oscar for?
A. Mystic River
B. I Am Sam
C. Sweet and Lowdown
D. Dead Man Walking

5) Stephen Daldry, director of The Reader, has directed five actors in Oscar-nominated performances, including Kate Winslet’s nominated performance this year. Who is the only actor to have won under Daldry’s direction?
A. Julie Walters for Billy Elliot
B. Ed Harris for The Hours
C. Julianne Moore for The Hours
D. Nicole Kidman for The Hours

Bonus) As of the 80th Academy Awards ceremony held last year, how many total Oscars have been awarded? _________

There was tons to eat. Tawnya brought hot dogs and all the fixins for Hotdog Millionaires. One of the best things there was mini bacon cheese pepperoni pizza sourdough burgers. Inspired by this on thisiswhyyourefat.com, Beth and Nick took a plain Sourdough Jack from Jack in the Box and stuffed them between two mini pizzas. It was delicious. Check out that site for some disgusting and great food ideas. If we wanted to go with the movie theme, I guess we could have also made Revolutionary Rocky Road and The Curious Case of Calzones, but I was happy with what we had.

I won't talk about how much I liked the Oscars this year since I already went over that in the final thoughts of my ONL post, but I had a really great time. Everyone got really into the show and we were all cheers and jeers when winners were announced. I had everyone fill out their predictions on an official ballot and kept track of how many people got right. I won with 15/24, but since I was the host, the second place winners (who went 12/24) had to beat each other out with a tie breaker. In the end, my bro-in-law Nick won and took home the big Starbucks gift card.

How was your Oscar night? What did you think of the winners/losers? Any memorable speeches? What did you think of Hugh Jackman? How did you like the acting presentation style?

  5. Jason,
You would have won if you were there. Maybe next year.

    Beth,
I think we should make at least one item from that site every time the family gets together.
