Got three new songs that I've been listening to a lot.
#3 Keys N Krates - "Uncle Otis"
Keys N Krates are a hip-hop remix trio that I found last year. They've remixed everything from MGMT to Michael Jackson to Drake. They put out a free EP last year and one of the songs on there is "Uncle Otis." The song takes the Otis Ray Redding, Jr. sample that Kanye West and Jay-Z used on "Otis" and uses it in a much more creative and interesting way. My favorite part of the song is the first 60 seconds. The deep bass beat with the whiny synth and siren increase really does it for me for some strange reason. If this played at a club, I would dance like a fool. Their whole EP is available to download legally for free here.
#2 The Decoration - "Heavy Hearts"
Indie pop band The Decoration made it on my list last time and here they are again. Anywhere is Home EP is probably going to end up being one of my favorite albums from 2012. And "indie pop" is the perfect term for it. It keeps taking me back to the mid to late-90s pop music. The writing and the music are great. "Heavy Hearts" is the last track on their debut EP, and it's my new favorite. You really need to check them out.
#1 Skrillex feat. The Doors - "Breakin' a Sweat"
I like Skrillex. I don't love him, but I think he does some good work. For those who don't know who Skrillex is, he's one of the current masters of dubstep. There are those who criticize dubstep as a music genre because it's basically annoying mechanical electronica. But creating these beats does take some level of skill and I think that is never more clear for Skrillex when it comes to "Breakin' a Sweat." People think that being able to create music on a laptop while riding in a car is wrong. It's not and those who feel like it is need to check themselves. Skrillex has won three Grammy Awards and won MTV's EDM Artist of the Year. For this song, he collaborated with the remaining members of The Doors to create an interesting dubstep/progressive rock/house song. Check it.
What have you been listening to lately?
