Results - Summer 2012 Top 10 Box Office Game

At the beginning of May, I wrote about how my friends and I are playing a Summer Movie Game. You can read that post here so that you know how this game works. It ended on Thursday, September 6th and below are the final results of this year's game.

As a reminder, here is how the scoring works:

• Getting number 1 or number 10 dead-on gets you 13 points (each)

The rest of the scoring goes like this:
• 10 points for numbers 2-9 dead-on
• 7 points if your pick was only one spot away from where it ended up
• 5 points if it was two spots away
• 3 points if your pick is anywhere in the Top 10
• 1 point for each dark horse that makes it into the Top 10

The scoring is tabulated so that you get the SINGLE HIGHEST point value for each pick- that is, if you get number ten right, you don’t get 13+3, you only get 13.

So it looks like Phil is the winner this year! Congrats to him. This is always a pretty fun game that requires very little of your time. If you would like to play next year, let me know.

Some things to note:

• The Dark Knight Rises took a huge hit due to the Colorado shooting. We'll never know if it would have surpassed The Avengers, but that's not important.
• After the shooting, box office intake was quite low for the rest of summer. A lot of the more recent films did worse than expected, like Total Recall and The Bourne Legacy.
• Four of the top five are comic book movies.
• Ted was the biggest surprise to see on the list for me and I think most others. Jason was the only one to put it in his top 10 and Phil selected it as a dark horse.
• G.I. Joe: Retaliation got pushed back to 2013 at the last minute while the game was in progress. I sent out an e-mail to those who picked it. We were able to either swap it with a new movie, or move up any movie below that. Lists were not allowed to be completely resubmitted.
