Here is my "Top Ten Most Anticipated Indie Movies of 2013" list. The definition of "indie movie" for this list is anything getting a limited release or distributed by an independent production company, or a film most people just plain don't know about. If you want to see the list of major releases I am looking forward to, that list is here. This is only my opinion. If you don't like my list, go do your own.
#10 Nebraska - Writer and director Alexander Payne has made a couple of my favorite movies of the last decade including The Descendants and Sideways. This year, we should see Nebraska come out, which is about an aging, booze-addled father who makes the trip from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son in order to claim a million dollar Publisher's Clearing House sweepstakes prize. This has been a passion project for Payne who has had this idea floating around in his head since 2003. He shelved it for a little while so as not to be labeled a road trip film director. It will star Bruce Dern as the father and Will Forte as the son.
Release date: TBD 2013

#9 Labor Day - Jason Reitman's Young Adult was a weak film to me. The dark comedy thing just doesn't do it for me, I guess. Now he's making a full-blown drama starring Kate Winslet, Josh Brolin, and Tobey Maguire, and based on a 2009 novel. The movie takes place on Labor Day weekend, when a divorced, depressed single mother encounters a large man bleeding profusely while shopping with her 13-year-old son. They give him a ride and later learn that the police are looking for an escaped convict. Here's to hoping that this will be more memorable than Reitman's last film.
Release date: TBD 2013

#8 Breathe In - Drake Doremus' Like Crazy was a film I totally connected with and listed at #4 on my top 20 of 2011 list. It won big at Sundance that year and he's looking to do the same with Breathe In at Sundance this year. The movie is about a happily married New York City music teacher who is drawn to a young British foreign exchange student. Scandalous! Felicity Jones from Like Crazy is in this along with Guy Pearce, Kyle MacLachlan, and Amy Ryan.
Release date: Premieres at Sundance on January 19, 2013

#7 You Are Here - The creator, writer, and frequent director of Mad Men is making his first theatrical film. You Are Here stars Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis, and Amy Poehler and is another movie about money. In it, two roommates in their thirties attempt to cope when one of them becomes a sudden millionaire after the death of his father. It'll be interesting to see what Matthew Weiner can do on the silver screen.
Release date: TBD 2013
Tease:
#6 To The Wonder - Reviews for Terrence Malick's next film are already out and they are very positive. Some call it his most abstract film, but that's hard for me to believe after The Tree of Life. Apparently Ben Affleck's character barely says anything at all during the whole film, and despite Rachel McAdams being one of the actors getting top-billing for this, Olga Kurylenko appears more in it than her. Javier Bardem also stars in what is sure to be another divisive movie.
Release date: April 12, 2013

#5 The Grand Budapest Hotel - It's unclear if Wes Anderson's next flick will make a release date this year, but it doesn't hurt to slide this movie on the list. I am still loving all of his films and The Grand Budapest Hotel is his next one. With a title seemingly inspired by the 1932 Best Picture winner Grand Hotel, the film is toplined by Anderson first-timers Ralph Fiennes (stepping in for Johnny Depp as Mr. Gustave) and Saoirse Ronan (who looks like she belongs in Anderson films), with Jude Law, F. Murray Abraham, and Mathieu Amalric also making their Wes world debuts. Don't worry, you'll still get your Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Harvey Keitel, Tilda Swinton, and Jeff Goldblum. Oh, and yes, Bill Murray will be back for his sixth helping of Anderson deliciousness. Shooting starts this month, and I bet if Moonrise Kingdom does well during Oscar season, we could see this movie by the end of the year.
Release date: TBD 2013... possibly 2014
#4 The Bling Ring - I feel like I've been waiting patiently for Sophia Coppola to come up with another movie that make me feel something like Lost in Translation. The Bling Ring probably won't be it, but it could be her most accessible film. The Bling Ring is about a group of fame-obsessed teenagers who use the Internet to track celebrities' whereabouts in order to rob their homes. It's inspired by actual events where teens robbed the likes of Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Orlando Bloom and more to the total tune of about $3 million in cash and belongings. It will star Leslie Mann and Emma Watson.
Release date: TBD 2013

#3 Only God Forgives - Drive was my favorite movie of 2011. Only God Forgives re-teams Ryan Gosling with writer/director Nicolas Winding Refn for what's sure to be an interesting film. In it, a Bangkok police lieutenant and an English gangster, played by Gosling, settle their differences in a Thai-boxing match. I can only imagine the exciting directions that this pair is going to take this. Also in the cast is Kristin Scott Thomas and Tom Burke.
Release date: TBD 2013
Tease:
#2 The Double - Did you see 2011's Submarine? Because if you didn't, you missed one of the best debut films for a director. Writer, director, and The IT Crowd star Richard Ayoade is back with his second film called The Double. Jesse Eisenberg plays a man who is driven insane by the appearance of his doppelganger. Like Submarine, the film should be full of quirk and laughter. It also stars Mia Wasikowska and Wallace Shawn.
Release date: TBD 2013

Here it is, the moment you've all been waiting for...
#1 Mood Indigo - Michel Gondry's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is still my second favorite movie of all-time. His efforts since then have been lackluster, but still incredibly creative and inventive. I think he benefited from Charlie Kaufman's whimsical script for Eternal Sunshine, allowing him to come up with some really neat stuff. I'm hoping Boris Vian's novel can do the same for him, which has been turned into a screenplay by Luc Bossi. If you read a brief plot synopsis, you can just tell that this was meant to be made by Gondry. The movie follows a woman who suffers from an unusual illness caused by a flower growing in her lungs. Audrey Tautou, Omar Sy, Romain Duris, and Gad Elmaleh will play the main characters.
Release date: TBD 2013
