What We're Watching 2013, Part 1

We've been watching a lot more TV than movies recently due to having to stay home and take care of the kids more, but that's okay because we love them, and there are so many good shows out right now. Let's go over a bunch of the shows that we've been watching during the first half of 2013.

Bates Motel - Psycho is a Hitchcock classic that has had everything from numerous sequels to a shot-for-shot remake, all of which haven't lived up to the originality of the first film. So, my hesitation on Bates Motel on A&E was pretty great. However, after watching 8 out of the 10 episodes released for its first season, I am happy to announce that both Bethany and I are huge fans of this show. Bates Motel is a reboot of the franchise and takes place in modern day. Yet, it's still a prequel because Norman is in high school and lives with his overly attached mom. A&E has already renewed Bates for a second season and there are two more episodes left to go in this thrilling current season.

-----------------------------

Doctor Who - Bethany and I are officially Whovians. We are all caught up on the series. While this current season hasn't really had anything interesting to offer yet, the mystery that surrounds Clara Oswin Oswald is great.

-----------------------------

Adventure Time - This is easily one of the best shows on TV right now, and I do not know any other adults who watch it. Adventure Time is what would happen if you mixed Ren & Stimpy with video game references, RPG references, Futurama, and acid. The world they've created around this show is expansive and nuts! Indiewire wrote a great article a couple months ago titled "Why 'Adventure Time' Is the Best Sci-Fi Show on TV Right Now," and I agree with all of it. Give it a few solid shots and I bet you'll somehow be mesmerized by this universe. Also, if you don't laugh at this or think this song is the greatest thing in the world, then what the heck!?

-----------------------------

Game of Thrones - It's back for season 3 and it is just as good as ever. The production level of this show is so high, that it seriously feels like a movie split up in different parts. This last episode featured a bunch of people climbing a giant ice wall and it had some spectacular special effects for a TV series. There have already been some very memorable moments, but I hear there is a lot more to come.

-----------------------------

Mad Men - This current season took a few episodes to really get going, but now it's so addicting. I love what is happening to the company and a lot of characters. I'm also really happy that the focus has seemed to come back to Don a lot. This really is a season about exploring him, as well as the way he works, lives, and loves. And the style of the late '60s just can't be missed.

-----------------------------

Monday Mornings - It's official: I love watching British people yell at others. Simon Cowell on American Idol, Gordon Ramsay on Hell's Kitchen, and now Alfred Molina on Monday Mornings. Monday Mornings can initially be seen as your typical medical drama, but it has a unique appeal. For one, it takes place in Portland, and Portland is cool. More importantly though, every Monday morning on the show, surgeons gather for a giant peer-evaluation meeting and are either praised of lambasted for their work. This causes a lot of twists or things you might not have thought of. Also, the character of Dr. Sung Park is one of the best new characters of the year on TV. Unfortunately, TNT has decided to cancel the series, so that's it. It's not a huge loss, but I'll miss it a bit.

-----------------------------

House of Cards - I blasted through Netflix's original series, House of Cards. The show was certainly premium cable show quality, like HBO, Showtime, or Starz. The story is about Frank Underwood (played by Kevin Spacey), a Democrat from South Carolina's 5th congressional district and the House Majority Whip, who after getting passed over for appointment to Secretary of State, decides to exact his revenge on those who betrayed him. One uncommon aspect of the show is that the main character looks at the camera at times and talks to the audience. Some see it as a dumbing-down of the plot or intentions of the character, but I think it's a much needed angle for a show that is as complicated as this.

-----------------------------

The Walking Dead - The third season ended with a few bangs. While I would have liked to have seen this season move a bit quicker, it was still pretty solid. Looking forward to more fights between Rick and The Governor.

-----------------------------

Top Chef - The 10th season of Top Chef finished airing back in February, but I never got to talk about it on here. This season was special because it takes place in my second favorite city in the whole wide world (Anyone know #1?), Seattle. Yep, our hometown was featured along with Juneau, Alaska during the last few episodes. There was a lot of talent in this year's contestants and my favorite was definitely Sheldon Simeon, who won Fan Favorite on the show. Unfortunately, he did not win the competition, but he got close enough. He went to school with one of my good friends, which is cool, and they've always had nothing but nice things to say about him.

I've been a little behind on Miso. but I plan on updating it soon, so feel free to check back there to see what other shows I'm currently watching. Also, I will be resurrecting my anime posts as I've been watching a lot of series recently. That will be coming soon. Additionally, I'd love to hear what shows you've been watching or would recommend, so comment and let me know!
