87th Oscars Winners and Thoughts

This was our sixth year hosting an Oscars Party, but we had to dial it down due to just returning from Disneyland and not having the same big venue from last year. It was still fun and I think everyone had a good time.

I hit a new record last year getting 21 out of 24 categories correct. Let's see how I did this year.

Performance by an actor in a leading role
My prediction: Michael Keaton
Winner: Eddie Redmayne
Thoughts: I knew it would be down to these two. I'm glad Redmayne recognized that he is a lucky guy. Keaton deserved it more.

Performance by an actor in a supporting role
My prediction: J.K. Simmons
Winner: J.K. Simmons
Thoughts: Very, very, very well-deserved. My favorite performance of last year.

Performance by an actress in a leading role
My prediction: Julianne Moore
Winner: Julianne Moore
Thoughts: Ugly crying face wins!

Performance by an actress in a supporting role
My prediction: Patricia Arquette
Winner: Patricia Arquette
Thoughts: No surprise.

Best animated feature film of the year
My prediction: How to Train Your Dragon 2
Winner: Big Hero 6
Thoughts: Whoa! I am surprised. They went with what I would have voted for.

Achievement in cinematography
My prediction: Birdman
Winner: Birdman
Thoughts: Totally deserves the win with its one camera shooting style.

Achievement in costume design
My prediction: The Grand Budapest Hotel
Winner: The Grand Budapest Hotel
Thoughts: After seeing Grand Budapest Hotel win so many awards, this wasn't a surprise.

Achievement in directing
My prediction: Alejandro G. Iñárritu
Winner: Alejandro G. Iñárritu
Thoughts: An accomplished director getting his first prize.

Best documentary feature
My prediction: CitizenFour
Winner: CitizenFour
Thoughts: Really no surprise since it's about one of the biggest leaks in history.

Best documentary short subject
My prediction: Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1
Winner: Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1
Thoughts: Lucky guess.

Achievement in film editing
My prediction: Boyhood
Winner: Whiplash
Thoughts: Really? I mean, it was my favorite movie of last year, but it wins over a movie that has content spanning 12 years? Huh.

Best foreign language film of the year
My prediction: Ida
Winner: Ida
Thoughts: The Polish film has been winning all around.

Achievement in makeup
My prediction: Foxcatcher
Winner: The Grand Budapest Hotel
Thoughts: Disappointed that Foxcatcher didn't win here, but Grand Budapest Hotel did a good job, too.

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original score)
My prediction: The Grand Budapest Hotel
Winner: The Grand Budapest Hotel
Thoughts: Desplat was nominated twice, so he had to win this.

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original song)
My prediction: Glory
Winner: Glory
Thoughts: What are more people going to be singing in the next five years? "Glory" or "EVERYTHING IS AWESOMMMMMMEEEEEEEE"!?

Best motion picture of the year
My prediction: Birdman
Winner: Birdman
Thoughts: This definitely seemed like a movie the Academy would go for. Even though I would prefer Whiplash, I am not disappointed one bit about Birdman winning.

Achievement in production design
My prediction: The Grand Budapest Hotel
Winner: The Grand Budapest Hotel
Thoughts: As with any Wes Anderson film, the production design was great.

Best animated short film
My prediction: The Bigger Picture
Winner: Feast
Thoughts: I hope the Academy is not getting into the habit of selecting a Disney film just because it's Disney. That being said, I did enjoy Feast quite a bit.

Best live action short film
My prediction: Boogaloo and Garaham
Winner: The Phone Call
Thoughts: ???

Achievement in sound editing
My prediction: American Sniper
Winner: American Sniper
Thoughts: The use of audio in the movie stood out.

Achievement in sound mixing
My prediction: American Sniper
Winner: Whiplash
Thoughts: The Academy doesn't usually split the sound categories, but a good win for Whiplash here.

Achievement in visual effects
My prediction: Interstellar
Winner: Interstellar
Thoughts: I think I voted for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes 2 on my sheet at the party. Not sure why I messed up there, but on here, I got it right.

Adapted screenplay
My prediction: The Imitation Game
Winner: The Imitation Game
Thoughts: It won the WGA, so it should have won here.

Original screenplay
My prediction: Birdman
Winner: Birdman
Thoughts: Yep.

Prediction rate: 17 for 24 (71%)

Final thoughts: That was not a good year for me. The Academy was a little unpredictable this year, which might be a sign of a big change. Or maybe it was just an off year for me. I don't know. I thought NPH was better than some hosts, but not as good as others. He was obviously going to do a song and dance, but I felt like it was too much. I'd rather have a comedian up there to make fun of movies and lighten the mood. I felt like there were even more boring musical performances than even last year, which is not a good thing. This show is about movies people! Music only makes up two categories! I still won our little Oscar prediction pool at our party again (still undefeated!), but gave the prize to the runner-up, Jason. It was an awesome night that I am already looking forward to next year.
