PLOT: A clean-cut high school student relies on the school's rumor mill to advance her social and financial standing.
THE GOOD: Funny. Easy A really is a funny movie. I was worried most of the funny scenes would be in the trailer, but there's plenty of good stuff in the film. Emma Stone proves to be capable of taking a leading role playing Olive. Since she's been in plenty of comedies before (Superbad, Zombieland, The House Bunny), she's got the comedic timing thing down. Her parents (played by Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson) are by far the funniest and have the best lines of the whole film. They play cool parents that are more like friends; the ones we all wish we had, but know don't really exist. Thomas Haden Church who plays Mr. Griffith also has a couple zingers, but is not in the film enough.
Bert V. Royal. While I wouldn't say that scribe Bert V. Royal deserves an Oscar for his screenplay, he does deserve a lot of credit since it's his first feature film script. It's well-written with some very witty lines and incorporates The Scarlett Letter well. Can you believe that, aside from the last 10 pages, Royal wrote this script in only five days?
THE BAD: View of Christians. I've never met anyone like Marianne (played by Amanda Bynes) who was described as a "Jesus freak". A teen like her just doesn't exist. But I understand that the movie needed some form of antagonist, so I guess I'll just accept it.
Slow. For a simple movie, there was a ton of explaining done by Olive, via her live webcast. And the explaining, was boring! I felt like I was being treated like a 12-year-old. Granted, there were 12-year-olds in the theatre. =/
THE END: Easy A is better and funnier than I thought it was going to be, but it's not great. One of the better teen comedies as of late. Parents could have a great opportunity to discuss the themes in this film with their children. I say wait for this one in the cheap theatres, or rent it.
DISCUSS: What did you think of Easy A? Do you think Emma Stone is a good actress? What did you dislike about the film? Do you think rumors about losing one's virginity would spread that quickly around school?
