There are no spoilers in this review.
PLOT: High-strung father-to-be Peter Highman is forced to hitch a ride with aspiring actor Ethan Tremblay on a road trip in order to make it to his child's birth on time.
THE GOOD: Directing. Todd Phillips co-wrote and directed Due Date. Phillips is responsible for last year's hit raunchy comedy, The Hangover. He's definitely got his style nailed down. The movie flows well and the laughs are consistent.
Acting. Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis are great. I love Zach's brand of humor. It's so offbeat and funny. I could watch him tell jokes all day.
Funny. Due Date is a pretty funny movie. A little too inappropriate at times, but it did make me laugh.
THE BAD: All the funny parts are in the trailer. Due Date suffers from this big time! Really. Don't waste your money seeing this in the theatres. If you watch the two trailers out for it, you've seen most of the funny parts. Very disappointing.
No heart. Due Date is practically a remake of 1987's Planes, Trains and Automobiles, but it's not officially announced as such. PT&A is better than Due Date because it's not only funny, but it also has a big heart. As much as John Candy's character is frustrating, you end up loving the big buffoon. There's a really touching moment at the end of the film that still occasionally brings a tear to my eye. No where to be found in Due Date. Please, if you have never seen Planes, Trains and Automobiles, now is the perfect time since it is one of the few Thanksgiving themed movies.
THE END: Due Date is not as funny as it should have been and almost all of the funny parts are in the trailers. Inspired by Planes, Trains and Automobiles, but less of a heart. Not a terrible movie, but also not a great one. I would recommend waiting to rent this one.
DISCUSS: What did you think of Due Date? Do you like Zach Galifianakis? Do you like Planes, Trains and Automobiles?
