Megamind Review

There are no spoilers in this review.

PLOT: The supervillain Megamind finally conquers his nemesis, the hero Metro Man, but finds his life pointless without a hero to fight.

THE GOOD: Voice cast. I thought the voices for the characters in Megamind were pretty good. Will Ferrell is extremely good as Megamind. He does just a very small pitch change in his voice and it works perfectly. His character also uses different pronunciations for words which I bet was his idea. Like, spider = "spee-i-der". Tina Fey, Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, and David Cross are all great, too.

Story. I think the story is pretty original. They took the Pixar approach to it this time. What do I mean by this? Well, Pixar does this thing where they market their movies, but only reveal the first half of the film. You leave satisfied because of all the surprises later on in the movie. Look at WALL-E and Up. Everything that happened on the Axiom or everything that happened on the Spirit of Adventure are total surprises. That is part of the key to making a good animated film. Unfortunately, there is another part.

THE BAD: Boring. You have to make the unknown part of the plot interesting and I don't think the writers of Megamind did that. The film really loses steam about 1/4 into the film and then even more about 2/3 into it.

Not that funny. Megamind is missing all those funny parts that adults appreciate more than the little kids. I chuckled a few times, but didn't laugh out loud like I did in Toy Story 3. Could have been better.

THE END: Megamind is fun and good, but it's not remarkable and it doesn't stand apart from the rest of the animated crowd. The movie has a similar theme to Sony's Despicable Me where a little good can be found in the bad guy. Where Despicable Me succeeds is where Megamind fails. Megamind did not keep the story entertaining enough to keep my interested. We took Juliana to the movie (her third film!) and she got restless towards the last 10 minutes. I can't really blame her. Megamind is definitely not as good as that other Dreamworks Animation film that came out this year, How to Train Your Dragon. It's a solid rental for me, however, there aren't really too many family movies out in theatres right now, so I would recommend this one for the kids.

DISCUSS: What did you think of Megamind? How would you compare it to other animated films this year? What did you think of the voice cast? Did you like the story?
