Weekend of April 27-29, 2012
The Five-Year Engagement – $22,000,000 estimate – My prediction: Under – $10,610,060 actual – Under
The Raven – $11,000,000 estimate – My prediction: Under – $7,289,642 actual – Under
The Pirates! Band of Misfits – $10,000,000 estimate – My prediction: Over – $11,137,734 actual – Over
Safe – $8,000,000 estimate – My prediction: Under – $7,892,539 actual – Under
Think Like a Man topped the box office this weekend as the four major newcomers couldn't seem to catch a break. After my total fail last weekend, I recovered with a complete win this weekend being the only person to get all predictions correct.
The Pirates! Band of Misfits was the highest-grossing new release for the weekend, but it still didn't perform very well. Aardman Animation films tend to not do very well in the States. Chicken Run did $17,506,162 opening weekend. Wallace and Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit did $16,025,987. Flushed Away is still their best opener with $18,814,323. Yet it was Over the estimate and my guess is because it's been a while since a new animated film has come out.
The biggest loss of the weekend was clearly The Five-Year Engagement. Seeing as how the movie's budget was only $30 million, it's not an immense disappointment, but for a Nicholas Stoller-Jason Segel movie, it's worse than expected. I guessed Under on this because no one had heard about this movie at my work. I asked. And I work in a production studio!
Safe came out slightly ahead of The Raven, but it did worse than the last three Statham action films. Again, no one had heard about this movie and people just aren't clamoring out to see Jason Statham anymore.
The Raven performed lower than expected and likely won't earn back its budget during its theatrical run.
The small Jack Black film Bernie topped per theatre average this weekend. At three theatres, it grossed an average of $28,602. The Norwegian-German film Headhunters came in second with a $10,753 average gross and Think Like a Man stayed in the top three with $8,737.
It's Avengers weekend this weekend! The big film is set to kick off the summer movie season with a bang... or... smash? Boxoffice.com's long term projection has been at $170,000,000 for a long time. We'll see if the number stays around there when they release their official prediction, but we can certainly expect a big number that should be the new highest opening weekend for 2012. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel also opens this weekend in 27 theatres. I hope people take the time to see this movie because I loved it (read my full review here). There are a bunch of limited releases coming out this weekend, but I must say that the only one worth talking about is LOL starring Miley Cyrus. Liek, oh-mi-gaush! That movie is going to be freakin' awesome! Mi-Mi (that's what I call Miley Cyrus because we're super BFFs) has this journal in the movie, and it all has stuff written in it, and stuff. Like, "Dear journal, today I kissed a boy and it reminded me of my daddy." And then Demi Moore plays her mom who finds her journal and is all, like, "WTF!? Why is my daughter kissing up boys." And she has a stern talking with her. /scene
