March 30-April 1, 2012 Box Office Results

Weekend of March 30-April 1, 2012

Wrath of the Titans – $37,500,000 estimate – My prediction: Under – $33,457,188 actual – Under
Mirror Mirror – $24,000,000 estimate – My prediction: Under – $18,132,085 actual – Under

The Hunger Games held on strong to make $58,551,063 over the weekend and keep the #1 spot causing some of the audience to skip Wrath of the Titans and Mirror Mirror. Phil, Tom, Dano, and I were the ones who got both predictions correct.

Wrath of the Titans opened at just over half what the first film did. No idea why Warner Bros. thought it would even be a good idea to make a sequel since the first one wasn't exactly well-received. The marketing showed more of the same, but with a different director and different writers. I picked Under on this simply because I didn't see much buzz around it from others.

Mirror Mirror underperformed as well, but it's largely part of the marketing and poor release timing. They really are aiming for mothers and daughters for this film, which relates back to the whole Hunger Games thing taking a lot of that demographic. Personally, I went with Under because of the poor marketing alone.

The documentary Bully topped the per theatre average chart over the weekend. It earned an average of $23,294 in five houses. You can read my review for that film here. The Hunger Games came in at #2, though dropped pretty significantly.

Titanic will be re-released in theatres this Wednesday in 3D and IMAX. Some are expecting good numbers for the second highest grossing film of all-time. On Friday, the major release will be American Reunion, the fourth American Pie installment that follows the original series and not the straight-to-DVD spin-offs. Advance screenings have generated some pretty good buzz and raunchy R-rated comedies are still going fairly good at the box office. Noteworthy limited releases to mention are ATM, Damsels in Distress, and The Hunter. ATM is a thrill/horror film about three people who get trapped in an ATM booth and being stalked by a killer. The cheesy horror fans are eating this one up. Damsels in Distress is about a group of popular girls who bring in a new student to teach her the ways of their school. It's being compared to Mean Girls, but more indie. The Hunter stars Willem Dafoe and Sam Neil in an action/thriller about a guy hired to capture a tiger believed to be extinct, but gets caught up in problems that are more than he bargained for (See? I can write Hollywood tag lines.). Have a good week.
