85th Oscars Winners and Thoughts

I slipped back last year only getting 14 out of 24 categories correct. My record is 16/24, but I didn't think I would beat that this year. It wasn't exactly an extremely difficult predictions year, but there were certainly surprises. Let's see how I did.

Performance by an actor in a leading role
My prediction: Daniel Day-Lewis
Winner: Daniel Day-Lewis
Thoughts: No surprise here. DDL has been winning most of the other awards, too.

Performance by an actor in a supporting role
My prediction: Robert De Niro
Winner: Christoph Waltz
Thoughts: This was the trickiest to predict in all of the acting categories. Loved Waltz in Django, so I'm not disappointed by this.

Performance by an actress in a leading role
My prediction: Jennifer Lawrence
Winner: Jennifer Lawrence
Thoughts: Good for her. Outstanding role, great performance.

Performance by an actress in a supporting role
My prediction: Anne Hathaway
Winner: Anne Hathaway
Thoughts: And this one was the easiest to predict out of the acting categories. Great job, Ms. Hathaway.

Best animated feature film of the year
My prediction: Wreck-It Ralph
Winner: Brave
Thoughts: I like Brave, but loved Wreck-It Ralph way more. Guess it was too cartoony for the Academy.

Achievement in production design
My prediction: Les Misérables
Winner: Lincoln
Thoughts: I think I originally had Lincoln down for this category, but changed it. Oh, well.

Achievement in cinematography
My prediction: Life of Pi
Winner: Life of Pi
Thoughts: Will Roger Deakins ever win an Oscar?

Achievement in costume design
My prediction: Anna Karenina
Winner: Anna Karenina
Thoughts: You are always so predictable in this category, Academy.

Achievement in directing
My prediction: Steven Spielberg
Winner: Ang Lee
Thoughts: Probably the biggest surprise of the night for me. Thought Spielberg had this one. Lee deserves it, too.

Best documentary feature
My prediction: Searching for Sugar Man
Winner: Searching for Sugar Man
Thoughts: Have heard nothing but great things about this film. Need to watch it.

Best documentary short subject
My prediction: Mondays at Racine
Winner: Inocente
Thoughts: Who knew? Thought it was pretty lame for that guy to be all like, "Support your artists" and stuff when there are other movies in his category with much more important issues like cancer.

Achievement in film editing
My prediction: Argo
Winner: Argo
Thoughts: Yep... needed to give Argo some more awards.

Best foreign language film of the year
My prediction: Amour
Winner: Amour
Thoughts: This category was a gimme. I mean, come on! Amour was nominated for Best Picture.

Achievement in makeup
My prediction: Les Misérables
Winner: Les Misérables
Thoughts: While the hair and makeup is not extremely complex in Les Mis, I think it also went to this category because of how much of a better film it was compared to Hitchcock and The Hobbit.

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original score)
My prediction: Life of Pi
Winner: Life of Pi
Thoughts: Didn't care for any of the scores this year.

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original song)
My prediction: Skyfall
Winner: Skyfall
Thoughts: People like Adele.

Best motion picture of the year
My prediction: Argo
Winner: Argo
Thoughts: No big surprise. Argo has been sweeping the other award ceremonies, despite Ben Affleck not getting a director nom here.

Best animated short film
My prediction: Paperman
Winner: Paperman
Thoughts: Yay! My favorite movie from 2012 got the award it deserves! Didn't matter what else happened last night. This made me happy.

Best live action short film
My prediction: Curfew
Winner: Curfew
Thoughts: Saw that it swept other shows, so I figured it would do the same here.

Achievement in sound editing
My prediction: Skyfall
Winner: Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty
Thoughts: Oooh! A tie! At our Oscars party, I joked that if anyone guessed that both of these would win, then they are the automatic winner. This is only the sixth tie in Oscar history, and the first since 1994. It's funny how ABC's Oscars website had no idea how to score this on their ballots.

Achievement in sound mixing
My prediction: Les Misérables
Winner: Les Misérables
Thoughts: Recording the actors' singing right on set during filming was a ballsy move and the crew deserves all the credit in the world for making it work so well.

Achievement in visual effects
My prediction: Life of Pi
Winner: Life of Pi
Thoughts: Great choice. Looking back at the movie, it really is a gorgeous film.

Adapted screenplay
My prediction: Argo
Winner: Argo
Thoughts: This was a close one for me, but in the end, I chose Argo due to all of the other praise it got.

Original screenplay
My prediction: Django Unchained
Winner: Django Unchained
Thoughts: While full of himself, Tarantino really is a fantastic writer.

Prediction rate: 19 for 24 (79%) A new record!

Final thoughts: I thought Seth MacFarlane was great! He's a great singer and super funny. I actually got a little bored when he was not on screen. I know a lot of folks who weren't fans, but I think he gave us some pretty memorable moments. The overall production was not as grand or glamorous as more recent years, but still nice. Hated the Chicago and Dreamgirls songs. Who cares or even remembers about those movies? Not sure why Michelle Obama had to invade the end of the show, but whatever, it's Hollywood. Her little speech was ridiculous though. I ended up winning our little Oscar prediction pool at our party again (still undefeated!), but gave the prize to the runner-up who was a newcomer to the party, Sarah. It was another fun night and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Can't wait for next year!
