Wake Sadness Right (and more)

I haven't done one of these for half a year! There has been so much great music that I don't even know where to start. I guess let's first go over my current favorite three songs that are doing nothing but playing on repeat for me right now.

#3 Avicii - "Wake Me Up"

Discovered my love for Avicii over the last couple months. Reminds me a lot of Calvin Harris. He's a Swede DJ who plays pretty simple dance music with some really catchy hooks. This particular song is good to me because it feature great lyrics by American soul singer Aloe Blacc, who you will swear is Mos Def when you first see him.

#2 Keys N Krates - "Treat Me Right"

My love for Keys N Krates should not be foreign to you. They are one of my favorites in the trap genre of music even though they're not always about big beats or blurring the lines between trap and dubstep. "Treat Me Right" is the culmination of their experience over the last few years as I think it defines them perfectly as music artists. The high-pitched voice, the hip hop beats, and the synths really bring this song together.

#1 Lana Del Rey vs Cedric Gervais - "Summertime Sadness (Remix)"

I will defend my liking of Lana Del Rey forever. Her voice is unique and she sings catchy songs. Sure, SNL might not ever have her back, but there's no doubt that she has become successful. "Summertime Sadness" is a great song on its own, but Cedric Gervais' remix of it is just brill'. It's even up on the music charts at #9 on Billboard, #12 on BBC, and #5 on Australia's ARIA chart.

Now on to some good songs that you might have missed over the summer that I loved.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu - "PONPONPON"

I have to give a special mention to Kyary Pamyu Pamyu who me and my whole family love right now. Her song above "PONPONPON" went viral a couple years ago and currently sits at over 55 million views on YouTube. As silly and goofy as it is, I think it's incredibly catchy. The most catchy music I've heard come out of Japan ever! We love all her songs, but especially Coral. She specifically requests "Way Way Pon Pon" as she calls it all the time. I've been following her for a few months now and recently discovered that she's actually coming here to Seattle to do a concert. Amazing! This chance doesn't happen often, so I snatched up tickets for me, Bethany, and Julie. Even though Coral is the biggest fan out of all of us, I don't think she would like the concert.

Dre Skull feat. Megan James and Popcaan - "First Time"
I am a fan of the band Purity Ring, especially for Megan James' recognizable voice. She did a song for Brooklyn-based DJ Dre Skull, which also featured Jamaican dancehall artist Popcaan. It's a solid collaboration between different artists.

Klangkarussell - "Sonnentanz"

There's nothing too special about "Sonnentanz," other than it being one of the most classy electronica songs ever.

Capital Cities - "Safe and Sound"

A pop song that I liked a lot over the summer was Capital Cities' "Safe and Sound." It's been all over the radio and TV, so it's hard to miss this one. But that trumpet... dang.

Grouplove - "Ways to Go"

Grouplove finally came out with a new single and it's better than anything they've done before. "Ways to Go" is so darn good that there are days where that is the only song I'll listen to on my way to and from work.

Michael Brook - "Acid" (from The Perks of Being a Wallflower score)

I got to see Perks for a second time finally over the summer and I was reminded by how good the music is. Both the soundtrack and score are so amazing that I downloaded both. "Acid" is from the score of the movie and it's played during the most dramatic part of the story.

Sleigh Bells - "Crown on the Ground"

I'm apparently one of the few who really enjoyed Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring. Part of that includes the kick-ass soundtrack. "Crown on the Ground" will probably end up being one of my favorite songs of the year.

Icona Pop feat. Charli XCX - "I Love It"

Here's another song that was difficult to escape this summer. It played in practically every commercial known to man this year, and for good reason. It's catchy. I went to a large bar in Delaware in July and this song came on. The place was never more alive.
