Snapmatic - 11/8/13

In lieu of Foto Phriday this week, I am posting this because I haven't taken very many photos lately.

I have been playing a lot of Grand Theft Auto V. It is, without a doubt in my mind, the best video game I have ever played. Particularly, it's the GTA: Online option that is so appealing. Pretty much everything that I loved about the main story mode is now available for my friends and I to enjoy together online. This is the first game of its kind. It's truly the first time that multiple online players can roam around an immense open world and do pretty much whatever they want. There's something so fun about jacking a helicopter, flying over to my friend to let him get in, land on top of the tallest building in the city, equip our parachutes and proceed to base jump off of it. Or any of the other countless things you can do in this game.

GTA will always have its controversies. From the very first game, the creators were determined to push the boundaries on morality. Because of this, GTA carries kind of a "bad boy" label with it. But I love the game because it gives you the freedom to choose. And I love my freedom because... well, 'Murica. You don't have to kill people all the time. You can just drive around the city, obeying every traffic law, and just play harmless races or sports, like golf, tennis, and darts, if you want to. I think that's the part of the game that's misunderstood. Just because I can do something bad in a game, doesn't mean that I'm going to do it, and there's lots of safe and good things to do, too.

Now more than ever, Rockstar Games has made the GTA series more accessible. Yet, those who only hear about all the terrible things you can do in the game will still scorn you because that's all they can focus on. One brilliant add to the game is the ability to take photos with your in-game smartphone. At first thought, this is used for taking pictures of an interesting accomplishment or a rare event that happened that you want to show your friends. But now people are using it for actual photography. They are using the photography feature to capture the beauty in the fictional state of San Andreas. And this is a gorgeous place.

Over the next few months, I'm going to occasionally share some of my own photos that I've taken in the game. I'm not trying to convince you that you need to play this game. That's entirely up to you. However, perhaps my goal here is to show you a sliver, just a sliver of what makes this game the best ever created. No blood. No weapons. No dead hookers. Just the state. The people. This is San Andreas.

The sun rises behind the Los Santos (modeled after Los Angeles) skyline as it burns away the fog.

The approach to Los Santos City Hall, complete with operational fountain.

Another harmless activity you can participate in is triathlons. Here is the start of the first one.

As the sun sets, some folks enjoy a pool party.

Some abandoned train cars in the city. Active trains will go by every now and then, too.

The Vinewood sign illuminated at dusk.

The Los Santos Customs sign at night will point you in the right direction for your car repair or upgrade needs.

A face in the clouds. Had to snap this quickly as the clouds are ever-changing.

Goodnight, for now.
