Other Best and Worst of 2013

With the Oscars coming up in less than a month, and not really having the time I'd like to blog about everything entertainment-related that has been on my mind, I thought that it would be nice to put a little list together of my favorite and least favorites of other things from 2013.

Best Actor: Joaquin Phoenix in Her
Runners-up: Bruce Dern in Nebraska, Christian Bale in American Hustle, Oscar Isaac in Inside Llewyn Davis
Thoughts: I don't know what more Joaquin Phoenix needs to do to get an Oscar. He wasn't even nominated this year, which is a total rob in my book! Tons of great male performances this year.

Best Actress: Emma Thompson in Saving Mr. Banks
Runners-up: Jennifer Lawrence in American Hustle, Greta Gerwig in Frances Ha
Thoughts: Another rob for me. Emma Thompson had one of the strongest performances of the year for a female actress. I haven't seen Blue Jasmine yet, so I can't really comment on Cate Blanchett, but I've heard she's amazing, too.

Best Breakthrough Performance: Moises Arias in The Kings of Summer and Ender's Game
Runners-up: Miles Teller in The Spectacular Now, Adam Driver in Inside Llewyn Davis and Frances Ha
Thoughts: Arias was hilarious in The Kings of Summer and a downright little turd in Ender's Game. I hope that quirky guy goes places.

Best Soundtrack or Score: The Bling Ring
Runners-up: Her, Gravity, Inside Llewyn Davis, Frozen
Thoughts: Lots of great soundtracks and scores this year. Total rob for Inside Llewyn Davis not getting a single Original Song nomination. Still waiting for the Her soundtrack to come out. However, Coppola knows how to pick her songs and I listened to The Bling Ring soundtrack more than any other movie album this year.

Worst Movie of the Year: The Wolverine
Runner-up: Oldboy, Pacific Rim
Thoughts: Look, I love the Japan settings, but the story was weak.

Best Comedy: The Kings of Summer
Thoughts: When I look at this category, I try to think of what movie made me laugh the most. This year, it was The Kings of Summer, even though it's more of a coming-of-age drama. The previously mentioned Moises Arias is just so funny.

Best Scene: Opening scene in Gravity
Runners-up: ISS Destroyed scene in Gravity, Please Mr. Kennedy scene in Inside Llewyn Davis, Solomon's Near Hanging scene in 12 Years a Slave, any scene Michael Cera is in in This is the End.
Thoughts: Gravity has two scenes in it that gave me goosebumps because of how well they are done. However, the opening shot edges out the rest of the competition because of its seemingly long take, score, and special effects. The video above is only part of it.

Crush of the Year: Kyary Pamyu Pamyu
Runners-up: Alison Brie, Emma Watson
Thoughts: OMG! Knocked Brie down a notch!

Best returning TV Series: Arrested Development
Runners-up: Mad Men, Game of Thrones, The Legend of Korra, Bob's Burgers
Thoughts: It came back and while it took a couple episodes to get going, Arrested Development ended up pleasing me greatly. I've re-watched it a second time and still hold up my opinion on it.

Best new TV series: House of Cards
Runners-up: Bates Motel, Derek
Thoughts: Really love House of Cards on Netflix. Can't wait for the second season soon!

Best anime series: Attack on Titan
Runners-up: Kotoura-san, Ore no Imōto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai 2, Aiura, Watashi ga Motenai no wa dō Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui, Tamako Market
Thoughts: Just to note, Kill la Kill is not qualified because it hasn't ended yet and that depends a lot on whether or not I would put it as the winner or not. Otherwise, Attack on Titan is the best anime of 2013. I have not been that addicted to finding out what happens on an anime since Bleach.

Best video game: Grand Theft Auto V
Runners-up: Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Thoughts: GTA V is the best video game I have ever played. The world is huge and you can do just about anything you want. The online aspect adds even more to the game. I love it.
